Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 WebCam

The picture and resolution are really good. The sound using the mic from the camera is a little sketchy, but I am told it sounds better if you use a head set.
We have purchased four of these cameras for various family members and ourselves. Our primary use is for Internet video chat, such as using Skype. And for that it works great. Is the video choppy? Yes, but that could be because of the Internet connection. We haven't done much recording with it so I don't know how video files look. The install was easy, the tools good for walking the novice through setup. For video chat, I highly recommend this product.
We got this camera so grandmother/granddaughter could see each other. We have an H.323 capable video phone and need to use Microsoft netmeeting to connect to this from a PC. The current Logitech drivers (version 10.5) do not support Netmeeting (Windows actually gives a blue screen of death as a result of these driver). I'm disappointed with the fact the drivers for this camera are so poor.
Before buying this camera, I'd recommend going to Logitech's website and looking at their User Discussion Forums for the list of issues.
Camera was returned.
The cam has a very good image quality, I use it only with Linux and while drivers are not yet in the official trees or in distributions, they work resonably well (search for linux-uvc).
Unfortunately they use only the Video4Linux2 interface without backward compatibility with the older V4L1 api, so some applications will not work.
I have it for over a month now. It's been used only for web video never tested the still picture capability. It delivers very decent quality video in various lights. The built in microphone works pretty good deliveryng clear sound. I have been complimented more than once by my web buddies on the quality of my video, so I would recommend it to any day-to-day user
This camera works if you do not mind replugging the USB in every time you use it. I have contacted Logitech and have not gotten a response. I would not recommend this camera. Also it does not come with the headphones as stated in the description I contacted Amazon about this and changed the camera and received the same. After second try they gave me a discount on the product. Look for a different camera this one not worth the hassle.
WebCam used to record interviews and functioned as advertised. I would recomend this product.
I live in Houston, TX. and I look forward to saying "GOOD MORNING" to my nieces in Canada each morning via the Logitech WebCam. When I purchased the Pro 5000 model for each of them as Christmas gifts, I had no idea how much fun it would be for the little ones to actually SEE my 3 pets and me while we talk! They can't wait to finish breakfast and to get dressed before we chat with each other. This is going to be a gift that we ALLLL can enjoy throughout the year!

I have used this model web-cam for the past year with very good results. So this Christmas, I purchased the Legitech Pro 5000 for my other 2 children! Now the whole family can 'see' each other!!!!
Lots of quite severe pops and clicks while using this webcam. Tried all the fixes, but none have worked to correct this problem. My son has the same problem with his, too. I see from the mfg website that this is a common problem and that they have been trying to fix it for a long time without success. The video is ok, but doesn't make up for the bad audio.
Avoid purchasing this webcam. I admit, I made a mistake.
A crystal clear image.
Auto focus.
my family overseas is impressed when we webcam.
highly Recommended.
I have had previous version of the Logitech camera but this is by far the best. The picture is clear and the color excellent. I would highly recommend it.
I just purchased 3 Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 web cameras and have had lots of trouble getting them installed. The installation goes very smoothly when I am signed in with Administrator rights. However, when I want to turn the computer back over to the employee to use under their limited account, the camera will not work. I've given full-control on the security tabs of every program I can think of for the user. I've made the employee an administrator, installed the camera, it works great until I make the employee limited again. When I called Logitech this afternoon, I was informed that the camera was created to use on one account, not with multiple accounts and that this is a "cross platform" issue that they can't help me with, I need to call Micro Soft. Ha! Not on your life!!! Does anyone out there have a fix for this very frustrating problem that Logitech will not help with? Guess they don't mind having cameras returned due to their horrible customer service because that will be what we have to do if we can't solve this issue. Thank you!
I was very excited when I bought this camera but be very careful because the requirments say it is compatible with Win XP. This cam is only compatible with Win XP service pack 2, so if you cannot get service pack 2, the camera is a useless piece of junk.
I've had this web cam for about a month now and I have nothing bad to say about it. Some reviews in the past mentioned that the lens cover comes off too easily and they're right, but it takes all but a second to put it back on - when you're using it. We hardly use it.
Great quality while on the cam, and the microphone works great! Blocking out outside noises, and it really zeros in on the one chatting with the camera.
I highly recommend this camera to anyone looking to purchase a webcam.
This was my first web cam purchase. I researched reviews on Amazon and PC Magazine. This cam seemed the best bang for the buck. I purchased one for myself and one for a family member so that our distance didn't seem so far. The cams are working out terrific. The audio and video are very good. I would recommend it!
The product i received doesn't include a headset. A replacement didn't include it either. I still don't know if amazon is mixing up the 2 models of Pro 5000 (w/ and w/o a headset) in shipping, or if the product description is simply wrong for the model they are selling.
I have owned 4 webcams: from those early B&W webcams (also Logitech btw) to this new Quickcam Pro 5000.
My biggest problem with all of the others: the quality of the picture in low light conditions; i.e. in the evening when your sitting behind the PC.
The Quickcam Pro 5000 delivers a clear picture all the time. Dark or light; it is by far the best I have owned so far. Even when I am just lit by the light from my (LCD) PC screen it is working! It has good other options, like face-tracking software and digital zoom & tilt.
Bottomline: this cam is the best I have owned so far (Jan. 2007) and worth every penny. It works with all major brands of Webcam VOIP software (like Skype) and online communities like Stickam.
Note: I own the latest version that says "Rightlight 2" technology. The older one just say "Rightlight" and are sometimes offered for lower prices. Beware: it might be the older product then.
After reading some reviews with installation problems, I was careful in following the directions closely, and all went well installing on XP-Home. Since this is my first cam, I can't compare it to others, but am please with the picture quality, and think it was a good buy.
My experience with the QuickCamPro 5000 WebCam has been disappointing. Perhaps the problem lies with me rather than with the product. However, I have not yet been able to maintain a good "sound" connection between myself and my daughter (who has a less expensive version of the Quick Cam). When I do have a reasonable connection, there is a significant delay between the sound and the video. Also, the video, though not all bad, is somewhat distorted. When I tried to install the program on my son's computer (which is somewhat faster than mine), we weren't able to do so. As already noted, the problem may be with me rather than the QuickCam. However, after many tries, my disappointment remains.
The Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 WebCam has been a wonderful webcam thus far since I purchased it October of 2006. It is extremly easy to set up. Just rember NOT to plug in the webcam first. I was told it will mess the camera and the computer up. This camera is perfect if you plan on talking to people via webcam. The quality is good, NOT great. It's better then most, but could be improved. I upload alot of video's on YouTube and the quality of upload has not been great with this camera. Which is why I personally gave it 4 stars. Also be careful with lighting around this camera, and the color black. Whenever I wear a black shirt other colors run through it. Other then that it has been a wonderful camera. Enjoy!
The winning points for this webcam are great low light ability and nice field of view. The Fusion is supposed to be a step up from this one but its' low light capability is markedly different (not as good, in my opinion). But one would expect the visual experience to be somewhat different since the fusion uses a cmos sensor whereas the 5000 uses a CCD. Cmos sensors have been playing catch up to CCD technology for quite a while now and are almost equivalent now but in absolute terms, I think CCD still has a slight edge over CMOS when it comes to image quality. Setup was quick and painless. Go for it.
Other than one blue screen of death on my laptop (none since -- likely a USB problem, and may not have anything to do with the camera itself), this camera works fine. It was reasonably priced, and has a decent image. That's all I am looking for.
I ordered three of these for Christmas, but found out that the people I was going to give two of them to already had webcams.
The one I kept worked fine. It works like it should -- no problems, no installation hassles and the light adjustment software works well. The microphone works OK too, you don't have to shout to make yourself heard. I use the webcam on an XP system with Yahoo messenger as the communication software. The webcam picture will occasionally freeze but the voice does not, and the picture unfreezes after a while.
The two returns were accepted by Amazon without problems. I had to pay shipping because it wasn't Amazon's fault that the webcams were returned, but this wasn't out of line. They printed out a pre-paid return shipping label and a return slip, so I just put the slip in the box and the label on the box and sent it back. The return was really hassle free.
Great Webcam. I own the Pro 4000 and purchased the Pro 5000 for my gf. This camera provides crisp clear quality and if you have broadband access, and skype the images are very clear with little lag (partially dependent on broadband speed). The stand is also really cool, unlike the pro 4000 the pro 5000 can be notebook mounted. Would recommend to others in the market.
Love this camera and the face tracking ability of it is great. When you have a two year old that cannot sit still it comes in handy. The rightlight technology is great too as I don't have the greatest lighting around my desk.
Definately recommend this camera to anyone in the market for a new webcam.
Reasonable price, good features, easy setup and install. My husband and I both own one and think they're great.
Regrettably, I would not recommend this cam if you want it for Instant Messaging.
I could not get it to work on my rather old Dell PC, so tried it on a modern, hi-spec IBM T42. While I can see an image on the Cam's QuickCam feature, and it is recognised by Live Messenger, I cannot get an image to be sent to the person to whom I wish to chat.
A search on the Logitech Forums, revealed many, very unhelpful messages and tips in respect of this problem. The upshot seems to be that it is only supported to use with Logitech's Video Calling software (monthly fee) and not with 3rd Party programmes like Live Messenger. A pity, as that's why I bought it.
I cannot find any solution on the MS Messenger Forums, or anywhere else, and I'm pretty Computer savvy, so it's just going to gather dust, as it's hardly worth my shipping it back, having shipped it out of the US and paid import duty and taxes on it where I live.
I have been very satisfied with this WebCam. It takes Great still pics and has Wonderful video. The effects available with this Cam are lots of fun. Since my Dad moved across country, it has been Fantastic! I can still see and speak to him every evening.
Can only agree with the other positive reviews... After researching lots of cameras and sites, i settled on this, but had some angst from some of the problems I'd seen. can only attribute it to older versions of the software....I did the install (before connecting the camera), let it get the latest software update, finished the install, and was on the air. Great quality, the "track me" works very well. Am very pleased with this for great quality at a reasonable price, in a technology where you get what you pay for.
NOTE for mac users: There are two models of this camera.. The older one ( P/N 861205-0000, USB id 0x08c5) does not work with mac. The newer version, P/N 861306-0000 usb ID 0x08ce) does. from what i've researched, the newer models will have "rightlight 2" advertised for them. the macam project says they have someone working on a driver for the older models, but it's not there yet. So it's great for Wintel machines, get the new version for macs.
Go check out Logitech's own forums. The software for this camera crashes Windows if you have a new AMD dualcore CPU. I have contacted Logitech about this and they offer no fix nor pretend to have one in the works. Don't get this camera if you have a CPU like mine.
The image is great. But for some reason, after I installed the updated software, it gives me bluescreen and freezes the screen.
I would definitely recommend this product. This is the 2nd webcam that I tried. The first one was a Creative Live Cam Notebook Pro and it doesn't compare to this one at ALL. The quality on the pro 5000 is very good, and it is running fine on Vista for me.
Terrific product, great for use with the Skype software. Very good picture quality and include face tracking software which actually works very well.
We got this web cam to talk to our daughter who just moved to Chicago and it works great. We installed the software, it up-dated itself to the new version, we then plugged the carmera in and it all worked perfectly. Boy, this is a lot of fun too. Great Product.
Don
We've switched from a more expensive web camera to QuickCam Pro 5000 for providing special behavior imaging solutions for teachers and behavior specialists who deal with autism. Quality for showing student activity up to 15 feet from camera has been great.

I got this to see if the frame rate and image quality was good enough for a deaf person to use it for lip reading. The answer is barely. I'm running this on an older P4 under Windoze XP Pro SE with close to a gig of memory. I had to go to the lowest image quality in order to achieve a frame rate fast enough for a good lip reader to understand. The software that came with the camera works well but I had problems with it interfacing with the EnVision SL software package I was trying out. The video was fine but the audio was absent. I have not tried it with any other video conferencing software. The camera is well made and sturdy, except for the flip-down privacy shield, which would rather be somewhere else and is on the floor behind my computer desk right now. Not a big deal for me. The depth of field is surprisingly good so that lack of a focus control is not missed. I find myself taking a picture almost every time I pick it up because I touch the shutter button located on top of the eyeball. Again, not a big deal.
If your on a limited budget and want to see your grandkids on a regular basis who live miles away, the Logitech QuickCam is a great way to save money on airfare.
High quality product and ease of operation make this item a winner
I bought one for me and one for my daughter. This web cam shows a great picture and true color. It compensates for lighting and is easy to set up.
The only down side I have found is that we do get feed back on the sound. It could be that the speakers are too close to the camera. I have moved mine away, but my daughter still gets feed back at times. She has speakers attached to the monitor so this makes it hard for her to position the camera away from them. Over all this is a great product and we really love it. It is as close as you can get to being there.
I bought this to use on Windows 2000 Professional. After a LOOOOONG installation and downloading of numerous updates from Logitech, I finally got th webcam to operate. However, the webcam app would freeze after trying to access any menu in the Logitech window. This was consistently the case after many reboots.
I believe the QuickCam Pro 5000 just plain does not work well on Windows 2000 since it was released more for XP. I'm returning it and buying a QuickCam 4000 instead that I know will work on Win 2000.
Also, please note that the 5000 is NOT supported on the Mac, and even macam support has not been completed as of yet.
IT TOOK A LONG TIME TO DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE BUT OVERALL IT WORKS GREAT
After an hour (so far) of trying to get this thing to work - no luck. I have a Dell Latitude laptop that is less than 3 months old so my system is pretty up to date. If I ever get it to work maybe I can write a more positive review.
I bought this based on the fact that it is supposed to be one of the best in dim light. Admittedly, it does boost low level light conditions very vell but with a major drawback - as it boosts the signal for low light it drops the frame rate for video by half. From what I can tell, once the "Low light Boost" is increased to the first level (even though it shows a continuous slider control, it only can be set to 3 levels) the motion blur and audio sync is bad. Unlike older versions, you can't change the frame rate manually and there is no indication of what it is set to either. It does it automatically and from what I can tell it cuts it in half from 30fps to 15fps whenever it uses "Low light Boost".
Other than a window to one side I have a 60W goose-neck lamp shining down on the desk from above head height and about 2 feet in front of me. With everthing in manual and the Low Light Boost down to zero it's a very acceptable picture and no motion blur but put it in automatic (RightLight)and the Low Light Boost goes to max, my face is way too white and the motion blur is terrible. Even in the daytime with sunlight coming in thru the window it set the Low Light Boost to a third and the blur was there.
I suggest putting everything in manual if you want high frame rights.
As an aside, I tested this out with Skype to call a friend that has an old QuickCam Pro 3000. He had worse conditions than me but always had a perfect picture with high frame rates even with low light conditions. His Quickcam software allows him to change the frame rate manually.
This webcam works great with Yahoo Messanger and has all the features of cams twice is price. It was very easy to set up. Most of the time I spent on set up was trying to disable all the firewalls. Getting it to clamp onto laptops and thin monitors is a little difficult. We finally folded a wash cloth to tighten the fit so it didn't slide around.
It has a built in microphone so you don't really need the headphones.
I got this web cam on the advice of my friend and I like it. You can adjust the settings to your preferences and the camera takes and clear pictures. The web cam is very easy to use period.
I had a webcam years ago but it became so old I tossed it. I recently bought this one and can't believe the advances. Every person I have chatted with says the picture is crystal clear. The built-in microphone also does a great job of delivering your voice. This camera also tracks your head so moving around a little does not become a problem.
I use this on the top of the monitor, with my desktop. I have used it with my laptop and it does a great job of staying balanced on the lip of the monitor.
Good job Logitech!
I tried all types of chat software that provide audio and video, but could not get both working at the same time. If the audio worked the video did not and visa versa. i am very frustrated with this web cam, i would not recommend this. If anyone know a solution please let me know...
Be warned - if you use any of the new v7.0 Security Suites from ZoneAlarm (that include the new Kapersky Antivirus engine), LOGITECH WEBCAMS WILL NOT INSTALL FULLY - you will have only limited functionality AT BEST. As of 4/28/07, this is an ongoing unresolved issue between the two companies, with both pointing fingers at the other. I'd encourage you to verify in the various forums that this problem is still present before you buy (or not buy).
This is not restricted to just the Quickcam Pro, but all Logitech cameras, apparently. I have personally also witnessed it on the QuickCam Fusion.
I absolutely love it. I use it to see and make faces at my new granddaughter who is in Chile (I am in Philadelphia, PA). Great price for a quality item.
Followed the enclosed instructions for installation and updated the software. All worked fine, except for the sound, there was none. Upon restarting the computer, I experienced the worst crash with XP ever. All programs would shut down and send an error message. Luckily after the 3rd computer restart I was able to access the system restore program and restore to an earlier time. Everything is fine now, except that the camera is disconnected and awaiting for a bug fix. Searched the internet and found out my problem was very common. I sincerely hope LOGITECH fixes the bug since the camera seemed to have a very clear picture for the 2 minutes that it worked. DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA UNTIL THE FIX IS AVAILABLE.....
I give this cam 5 stars, i wish it had higher resolution but other than that it worked great. I am running windows XP sp2 and havent had one single problem like some others, it loaded on the first try, updated and its never cause a single issues, ive had it for over a year now
the face trackin is pretty neat and ive already made a bunch of videos with it for youtube and myspace
Did nobody at Logitech test the software with this camera with Windows XP SP2? I mean, HELLO! I'm an experienced PC user. When I loaded the drivers/software that came with this camera, it sent Windows into a crashing frenzy! There were numerous issues with Windows' Data Execution Prevention (DEP). When searching on the Logitech forums, I saw numerous posts about this, with the basic final outcome being: "Uh, we know about it, but we're not going to say anything about it and we have no recourse how to make our product work." I found a way to disable DEP. This still didn't fully work, but I was able at least to make the camera run briefly, and the video looked good, but what's the use if your system won't function properly with it installed? I actually called the Logitech customer service line, and the guy I talked to, besides sounding as if he'd rather be doing anything but what he was doing, tried to blame it on Microsoft or a hardware error. He wasn't even aware of the DEP issues that were being discussed over a long period of time on his own company's forums! That Logitech is a crack outfit! Another option was to load just the drivers, and not the accompanying software. When I did that there were no more DEP issues, but every time I booted up, I got an error saying Windows Explorer had encountered an error and had to close! I'll tell you what's closing; the lid to the box containing this camera, because it's going back! After uninstalling the camera's drivers and software, Windows was happy as can be. I will be to when I get rid of this system-destroying nightmare and buy another product that somebody bothered to test!
Overall, this camera works pretty well. The video is good. At first, my HP laptop did not recognize the mic but after rebooting it worked. The avatars don't really work well enough to be useful so don't buy the camera for that feature.
Have had this webcam for over a year now. Setup was smooth and simple on my Dell computer. Bought a new HP computer and setup was again flawless and easy. Use it primarily for video emails. Everyone that receives my video emails says "what camera are you using...it's fantastic". Making video emails couldn't be any easier, press make video, review it if you like, and then press send in email. Just that simple. Picture is surely not high definition, but perfect for the job. Comes with comfortable headset/mic and also built in mic in the camera. Prefer the headset mic as camera mic sounds a little "hollow" due to the distance from the person speaking. Also works flawlessly with Skype. Paid about $60 for the QuickCam Pro 5000 last year, prices seem stable. Don't care for the useless funky cartoon features, but some may.
DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT DUE TO ITS SOFTWARE! I installed the software for the QuickCam Pro 5000 on my desktop and my computer repeated crashed and elicited running error messages. I immediately removed the Logitech software from my desktop. The desktop now runs normally. I thought it was a quirk, so I installed the same logitech software on my laptop. The same problems occurred, except this time, the computer won't allow me to remove the Logitech software. Essentially, I cannot use my laptop and am relying on my desktop. This may not occur with everyone, but the problem is there for Windows XP systems.
Easy to set up, great with Skype, runs smoothly. I am a sophisticated computer user but new to video equipment. This one, however, exceeded all of my expectations. You can beat its quality for this price. My video is always better in quality and in lighting than any of my friends (I have at least ten other people on Skype with cameras). You won't regret buying it!
I found this webcam to be very easy to connect and use. The picture was excellent and, after getting used to the sound lag, the audio was also good. I would highly recommend this product to anyone searching for an excellent webcam.
I DON`T KNOW HOW TO RATE THIS DEVICE BECAUSE I HAVEN`T BEEN ABLE TO FIGURE IT OUT YET. IN OTHER WORDS I CAN`T USE IT,BECAUSE THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE ON HOW TO INSTALL IT AND NOT ON HOW TO OPERATE IT.AOL DOES NOT SUPPORT THIS BECAUSE THE FILE IS TOO BIG FOR IT.I HAVE ASKED OTHERS BUT DON`T GET A CLEAR ANSWER,BUT I WILL FIGURE IT OUT AND AFTER I DO I WILL GIVE A RATING ON IT.I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE FRIENDS RECOMMENDED IT.
EGL
Pros: can use on both crt and lcd monitors
picture quality good
Cons: Logitech never resolved the mic driver issue for some XP versions. The mic does not work on XP Home Edition, even with SP2. Has driver conflicts with the OS. Used the latest 10.5 Quickcam software. I noticed someone else had the same issue but figured it was resolved by now, but it's not and will never get fixed. This is b/c Logitech support sucks. For a company that size, they are a DISGRACE!!!!! If it ain't the blue screen of death then it's no audio. take your pick.
I am very pleased with the Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 WebCam. It was extremely easy to install and operate. There was a little trouble configuring the sound, but Logitech's advisors worked that out fairly quickly. I have a 1.6 GHz processor and 128M of RAM which supports the camera just fine, but the imagery (avatars) software is just on the edge of my computer's capability. Overall, a fine product from a reliable company.
The product was given to my to my daughter so I can see my grandchild, who lives a long distance from me. It works very well for this purpose.
What a brilliant way to see and be a part of my 2 year old grandson's life on a continuing basic despite living states away. The webcam is easy for a non tekkie grandma except that the placement of it to get a good and flattering camera angle is a problem. The webcam also falls off its base when adjusted. All in all, it is something I am glad I have.
Excellent picture and sound quality. Very easy setup.
Great features.
I bought two of these when my in-laws moved out of state (one for us and one for them). It has been an Awesome way for them to keep in touch, especially for my 2 yr old son who really enjoys talking/seeing them via the webcam.
Highly Recommend!
I believe this is the second Logitech camera that my computer didn't like. I was running an older computer and the system would restart randomly so I just assumed it was time to get a new computer. So I got a new HP system with all the bells and whistles and I bought a new webcam (Pro 5000) to go with it. When I'm running any video software on the computer it randomly restarts. I would not recomend purchasing any logitech cameras. The face tracking is a good idea, and I like the zoom feature. but overall wouldn't recommmend this product to anyone.
This camera does what you want it to do. It does great video and audio. I use the camera for overseas video calls and the other party complements me on how good it works. The audio is also above average because of the built in echo cancelling (not found on cheap cameras). I have also used the included headset and mic and this also works quite well.
The video is quite good because of it ability to work in all light conditions (low to bright) and adjusts automatically.
I have other PC cameras and most are very inexpensive and I got what I paid for. While they do work, the picture tends to be quite poor in most light conditions. I would compare this Pro 5000 camera to an inexpensive camera as either watching s-video as to watching a snowy picture with rabbit ears on your TV. This is especially true in low light conditions.
I use this mostly with "skype".
Setup was glitch-free, though I downloaded the latest driver from Logitech as a first step.
Good quality video even in low light.
I feel it was worth the extra cost over the cheaper models.
It is a good webcam better than Pro 4000 which I had bought earlier. The images are sharper than the previous version. The only problem is it gets struck while chating even when we use high speed internet. Good for indoor recording along with PC or notebook.
Having owned the $19-30 models and experienced poor video with no sound or poor sound, the Pro 5000 is like the mercedes of the video cams. Great video and sound, along with awesome face tracking. Money well spent.
Works exactly as advertised; easy to use with Skype, with good image quality- nice auto zoom and head-follow features. Only deficiency is insecure seat on top of my monitor. I would prefer a more secure method for keeping the cam attached and in place.
quality is ok, nothing exciting nothing to complain too. but the design of the stand cannot stay still on top of the monitor, very annoying
I have never seem so good image in a webcam before. It also has face tracking, for one or two people. It's the best choice for this price.
You should be warned before purchasing this - IT MAY CRASH YOUR COMPUTER! I installed this just before April Fool's Day, and the joke was on me. After it crashed my computer and I had to restore all my files, I realized that I have to unplug the camera before I reboot the computer, otherwise the computer just keeps rebooting. It is a driver problem with the included software, which is necessary to operate the camera. My system operates on Windows XP, on a computer which is about a year old now. The camera itself is okay, but I would NOT buy this product again, because of the driver problem. BE WARNED!
Read the great reviews here so I bought two Pro 5000 webcams. Installed with the included software (v9.5) and got the notorious BSOD (blue screen). Tried on 2 different boxes, both nearly new mid-range Dells; same result. Software installs fine but as soon as the computer detects the webcam hardware it barfs. Forums on the web (including Logitech) show that this problem has a high occurence rate and not just on Dells.
There is a new version (10.0.0 Build 1439) downloadable from the Logitech website; surprisingly, it installed cleanly and smoothly with no problems. BTW, there is no upgrade path from v9.x to 10.0, it has to be a new install.
Performance: works quite well (at least with Skype 2.0), especially in low-light settings. For high back-light issues, override the automatic setting under Advanced Settings and adjust the gain. Face-tracking was bothersome, too distracting with all the zoom-in/zoom-out movement, I eventually disabled it. Automatically recognizes resident software that could use the webcam (Skype, MSN/AOL/Yahoo/Windows Messenger). If you opt to not use the headset you will find that the echo cancellation works well. v10 software records in wmv format, not avi (v 9.5), for those who care. Avatar concept is interesting. Not happy that the included software didn't work but pleased with the final outcome.
My advice would be to create a system restore point (XP) before you start this process because there are some very frustrated end-users reporting unresolved problems with v9.5 and v10.0 ranging from corrupted OSes, BSODs and 100% CPU utilization(v10.0). Most of the problems seem to be with the newer machines running XP. My CPU utilization rate is high (50%) for the quickcam10.exe process, this is on a Pentium D820 dual core running XP SP2. Easily met the system requirements and one would think that with the CPU resources allocated to this process I would get the advertised 30 fps, not so, there is definitely a noticeable lag when moderate movement occurs.
Bottom line, works very well on my 2 PCs with Logitech v10 software. I would give a 4 star for performance, however with the reported problems and potential user research time for compatibility issues I will downgrade to an overall 3 star rating.
Coupled with Logitech's version 10 of its software, the QuickCam Pro 5000 is an excellent webcam. The angle of view is slightly wider than the earlier QuickCam Pro 4000. However, it is not so wide that you will need to use the digital zoom when you're doing a solo appearance. The image is crisp and sharp, though the newer Logitech UltraVision with its all-glass lens is far sharper - and almost twice as expensive.
Logitech has come a long way with its installation and utility software. The installation of version 10 is simple. Load 'n go. The menus have been simplified and the graphics improved. Logitech has truly made webcams accessible to anyone, not just those with technical aptitude and skills.
Operation is flawless. Still photographs are of reasonable quality, though nothing you'd want for anything truly important. Movies are fun (and a cool way to amuse a three-year old). The QuickCam Pro 5000 works without a hitch with the latest versions of Skype, AIM, Microsoft LiveMessenger and Yahoo.
Overall an excellent value for those who don't want to spend twice as much for the Logitech UltraVision or don't need the quality of the latter's all-glass lens.

In just a few months I have purchased three of these cameras; the first camera was for ourselves, and then I purchased two more, one for one set of grandparents and another for the other grandma. The main use of this camera is with web conferencing (via Skype). It is a great camera with a little wider angle than most other webcams I have used, so you get to share more of what is happening on your end. The driver/software for the camera (I downloaded the latest version) is very complete and complements the camera nicely to provide echo-free communication as well as automatic color balancing and lighting.
One thing I have noticed is that if there is a lot of dark colors in the scene (like if I am wearing a dark shirt), the camera over-compensates and the image is somewhat over-exposed. The opposite is also true... a very light shirt will make the camera under-expose the image. However, I have found that this is not a big issue and I can easily "fix" this by adding some more light or dark objects to the scene if really necessary.
In closing, I am really happy with this camera and I have already recommended it to several friends.
A web cam is new to me but I like this camera, it's very clear and I like taking still shots with it.
I purchased this WebCam for my son and didn't expect that I'll enjoy it as well.
Three things I like:
1) The image is better than I expected
2) Face tracing feature. Surely camera doesn't move with the face, but if you zoom in, it traces the face within the "unzoomed" window.
3) You can put virtual glasses on and use other tricks.
went back and forth through some other webcams. picture quality was always...so,so. so then, i thought i'd try this one out.
glad i did :)
picture quality is crisp and clear...so clear in fact that my poor wife is afraid people will see her facial lines. oy. actually, she's pretty strong. she'll be okay.
anyway, with the troubles i had read about in some reviews here concerning the drivers, i went to logitech's web site and doenloaded th newest ones. installaion was a breeze and in no time my wife was talking to a relative though skype in Colombia...lines and all!
great camera. i hope you all enjoy it when you get it.
The quality of the picture is great, and my kids have a great time with the things you can superimpose over your face, it looks just like the special FX that is done on TV. It is a great cam and I would purchase again if I had to do so.
Decent price, good qualty, that's almost all you need. I just wish it came with more software options. (ie webcam over network or internet). But at this price, I can always find an app online!
when the product arrived last week Aug'06. Installation was easy as i followed instructions. After it asked for a restart which I did, thereafter no problems with installation.
The base of the camera is flexible so you can adjust to your liking. So far, the video feed has been very clear. I use it mostly with MSN messnger..and my friends continue to comment how how clear and crisp the image is. One of my friend has dailup but she can see my movements and expressions clearly. I look fwd to her gettin dsl to see further improvements.
I have a 5.1 digi cam, so pics didn't fascinate me, but i will admit they looked decent anyway.
the face trackin works well, keeps adjusting as you move ur head, also zooming in and out!
My room is not the best lit, but the camera's low light technology handles that superbly. My features are very distinguishable.
I would recommend this cam to anyone!
This product is in my opinion great value for money, loved the software interface for the zoom, cannot find fault with it.
Great buy.
this camera was a breeze to install, no problems with this camera including the software that came with the camera. The software that was included was v 9.5 which is the same as the web site. I only had to istall the software 2 times, I think that I did something wrong the first time is why. Other than that the camera is great.
I bought the cam based on reviews that I read and was aware of the shortcomings regarding the software. The shortcomings with the software are that you cannot use their microphone driver without getting the "blue screen of death". Logitech knows of the problem and had a fix on their website. The fix works but you ending using the native microphone driver. Doing this prevents the use of Logitech's echo reduction feature.
That aside, the camera is excellent and that made it worth the price. I'm hoping that Logitech will fix the software sometime in the next millennia
the camera works pretty good, the picture quality is awesome, the sound and microfon as well, even with or without the headset. is worth every dollar!
The picture quality is nice and it is a joy to be able to talk and see my son, daughter-in-law and grandson on Yahoo Messenger webcast.
Although this is an excellant camera it is very sadly let down by NO 64 bit or Vista support, otherwise I would have given it top marks.
The cam itself looks very sleek and advanced. As for the quality, flawless. The only con it has would be the software and the drivers. On my computer it seems that the drivers have some compatibility issues with windows xp. The cam cannot be plugged in before you start the computer or else the computer will restart itself due to a serious error from the drivers installed. Other than that, great cam.
I have used this product, and I just want to say "it's excellent", you don't need to use a headphone or a microphone to use it.
The people can watch and hear you very clearly
The software install was quick and easy
I have used the Logitech Quickcam for Notebooks Pro, and I can say that I prefer this Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 WebCam, because you can set it in any place and the quality is the same, but the problem with Logitech Quickcam for Notebooks Pro, is its clip, because there some notebooks that you can't use it.
The webcam worked GREAT! An exception to that, the software messed up both of my computers! I read all those reviews about the problems with the software, i thought by now Logitech notice the problem and fixed it, pssh i was wrong. I dont think this is just my problem, i think a lot of people also have the same problem as me.
This is a wonderful product with one exception. The software has some conflicts with other programs that deal with photos such as Adobe photoshop and other commercial photo programs. It causes problems with Adobe Acrobat too. If you buy only download the drivers and not the software. The software is only needed if you are going to take pictures with the web cam. Use a digital would be my recommendation
This is our first web camera. We are not computer wizards - we simply wanted to see and visit with our family over MSN Messanger. The camera was easy to set up and is very easy to use. Both the picture and the sound are excellent. We're very satisfied.
I am totally impressed with the product.. Great picture even in low light conditions...
This webcam is great! color, low lighting, bult-in mic eeverything...This is a must gadget for video conferencing.
I recently bought this camera. The software install was quick and easy. I rebooted like the software said to do and plugged in the camera. Works great. Clear picture. No blue screens, no errors. Just a clean, easy install.
We use it to show my son to my parents overseas - great camera
The quality of the webcam is excellent but the install crashed on my Dell 5150 under XP (windows blue screen).
In the box you will find not only the webcam, but also a headset for use while using Skype or other internet phone / chat services. The webcam has a flexible support that you can conform to your LCD monitor for a secure fit.
The webcam itself is pretty nice and I understand the good reviews that it has received for the quality of the video. I plan on using the webcam with Skype and the hardware is exactly what I needed. However, the software that comes with the webcam is horrible.
The first time that I tried to install the software onto my computer, I used the installation CD that came with the webcam. I followed the directions and after rebooting, I plugged in the camera per the instructions. Instead of finding the webcam, my computer showed the blue screen of death. Unnerved by this experience, I restored my computer to a time prior to the software installation and downloaded the latest software from the Logitech website.
The downloaded software installed without crashing my computer. However, during the installation process, I got numerous errors from Windows stating that the hardware was not compatible with Windows XP Pro. I was given the option of continuing the installation which I did, but why was I getting these errors at all? The camera seems to work just fine, but how long till my system suffers a crash?
Another complaint that I have is that the installation will put several programs onto your computer that startup when you start your computer. I good piece of software will give you the option of whether or not you want it to start when Windows starts. However, the only way to prevent the webcam software from starting every time you start windows is to edit your registry. I run some processor intensive programs on my computer which is why I don't want random programs running when I am not using them. If you don't mind all of the Logitech programs running in the background, then this last point is probably not a big deal to you.
In summary, it seems like a descent webcam and the face tracking option is pretty cool. However, I am concerned about the compatibility with Windows XP Pro and the numerous programs that Logitech will have running on my computer. Do not use the CD that came with the webcam. Instead be sure to download the latest version from the Logitech web site. I will be returning this camera to find one more compatible with my needs.
I am satisfied with the capabilities of this product. The recorded video and captured picture are very clear. The webcam works well in lower or dim lighting. It works perfectly with Yahoo messenger.
It is great. I put it on one computer, and I loved the results. I put it on another one and I discovered that with an AMD processor, I had to do a little work. After making sure my DirectX was updated, it works fine. I highly recommend it.
Image wise, this cam is probably the best in the market, period . However, Logitech needs to solve some incompatibility issues with windows xp. After installing the Quickcam 5000 my computer would only boot up to a black screen. A quick web search found many others around the globe having the same problems. Apparently it has to do with some audio features of the cam, nonetheless I had to go back to my old cam until Logitech comes up with a decent solution. Some people seem to have had a smooth ride though, so try at your own risk.
Trust me, you don't want to waste your money on a cheap webcam. The price for this item might seem a little expensive for a webcam, but you get what you pay for: it's much better quality, design, smooth video, and extra features.
The Quickcam Fusion uses a CMOS sensor, whereas the Quickcam Pro 5000 uses CCD. Fusion does use a higher CMOS sensor compared to low-end webcams, BUT low quality webcams also still use CMOS technology. Most will argue CCD as being better than CMOS. Granted, the results also show (read on further).
- The Quickcam Fusion can tilt 90 degrees back, but it can't tilt forward AND it CANNOT swivel from side to side.
- The Quickcam Pro 5000 can tilt 45 degrees up, about 10 degrees down, AND 360 degrees to the sides. The Quickcam Pro 5000 wins in terms of mobility.
The rubber tail is much more flexible on the Quickcam Pro 5000. You can straighten the tail to lay flat on a desk or on top of a CRT monitor; or bend to put it on your LCD monitor. Unlike the Quickcam Pro 4000, the 5000 does not come with a second base to attach; I mean, there's really no need for it since you can just adjust the tail.
If you plan on taking lots of STILL pictures with the webcam, then the Fusion would be a better choice. The Quickcam Fusion is true 1.3 mega pixel; whereas the Quickcam Pro 5000 is 1.3 mega pixel INTERPOLATED -- meaning it is software enhanced to create a high resolution still picture. However, the whole point of a webcam is for video, anyway; they have digital cameras for taking still pictures. So, in terms of video, the Quickcam Pro 5000, overall, has a clearer video with more vibrant colors. However, bright light will look washed out in white. The Fusion doesn't do a good job with fast motion, as it will blur -- but it does, however, do a better job in low light conditions.
The Logitech Pro 5000 has a wide lens of 63 degrees; the Fusion has a wider lens of 78 degrees. If you plan on using the webcam with lots of members, then the Fusion would probably do a better job of fitting everyone on the screen; however, if you plan to use it alone more often, the Logitech Pro 5000 would be a better choice.
With the Logitech's top-line webcams -- Logitech Quickcam Pro 5000, Quickcam Fusion, and Quickcam Orbit -- includes the Logitech Video Effects. With only those Logitech webcams, you can add cool special effects on yourself, like glasses or gas mask, while you chat with your friends. Like the face tracking feature -- as freaky as this may sound -- it will try to recognize the position of your eyes, nose and mouth and add those special effects on you. I really like this feature and it makes chatting a lot more fun. However, don't expect it to work 100% perfectly: moving around too much would make the special effects disappear and the camera would need to detect your face again; it can be a pain for many, especially when it complains that there isn't enough light to detect. It'll probably work better for people with distinct big eyes and lips. I am Asian but it still worked for me. (Um, whatever that means.) Just remember not to move around too much. You can also choose different avatars, such as a 3D shark, that will follow your movements. The Logitech Video Effects is an extra feature, which some may not really appreciate, but when it works, trust me, it is a lot of fun. You can download more video effects from Logitech's website. Along with the video effects, you can also record video at 640x480 and save it as a (somewhat) compressed AVI.
You can adjust the exposure, brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness, white balance, gamma, mirror horizontal/vertical, etc. The microphone is located above the green LED on the webcam, and it does a really good job picking up sound.
If you prefer a more modern look then you'd probably lean more towards the Fusion, whereas the Quickcam Pro still has the early round eye-ball webcam 1.0 look. But personally, I like the black finish and silver rings on the Pro 5000; it goes well with my black monitor. However, what's more important is the video performance. Overall, the Quickcam Pro 5000 is one of the best webcams out there today. Don't settle for a cheap webcam - it's just a waste of money.
IMPORTANT: The software CD inside the package might be outdated (most likely), so don't use it if it is. Just download the latest from Logitech's website. And make sure you install the software first, before connecting the camera, to avoid any further issues.
Lots of people do not know the difference of CMOS sensor and CCD sensor... and that is the biggest impact on the quality of the images they will have with their webcam...
The QuickCam Pro 5000 has a CCD (which is the best sensor) and this means a great light sensitivity.
I had the QuickCam 4000 and since I was impressed with the quality, and all of my friends stated that the image of my webcam was really great (compared to the cheap ones), I decided to give my 4000 to my parents and get the new one.
Acctually, there is not a whole lot of difference between both of them, and I keep most of the coments I had for the 4000 to the 5000...
I was amazed with the quality of this camera, and believe me that all my friends mention the same thing... This is perfect for Web Conferences... I use it on Skype, MSN, and to record some movies with the software that comes with it.. Quality is Great !!
The Microphone on it good as well... It may pick up the background noise, depending where it is located of course.. but in the overall it has a good quality...
Another simple but real handy feature is the plastic cover that goes over the lens and will prevent it from beeing on and filming when you really don't want it...
Also, it comes with two goods monitor (or shelf) stands..
CRT or LCD...
The list goes on with Face Tracking, Zoom and other stuff...
You will Love this camera... Just as I love mine...
And I must say I am a fan of it since the 4000 :-P
small, sleek, sits pretty well on my laptop and desktop too.
provides nice video quality to my family watching 10,000 miles away. kinda expensive though
pretty satisfied with the purchase.
I had used camera for about 4 months. Works fine, but if you need camera just for video chats get something simpler and cheaper than this one which overloaded with features that are not useful.
this is really a good webcam, and well worth its price i should say. Its face tracking feature, microphone everything works fine. the picture quality is also very good. i will certainly recommend this webcam for budget buyers. its well worth the money.
This camera has great video and works well with skype but the avatar software has much to be desired. Works sometimes but most times it does not. I have a FAST pc with a meg of ram so I know it is not my pc. I also have 256meg of video ram. If you want a great camera for just voip, this is it. The mic features work well too.
No regrets from me.
Great looking picture and good sound. No installation problems, except for a conflict with one of my other USB devices. I have a USB recording setup and both it and the the Logitech device conflict with the sound card. Manually setting the sound inputs and outputs is necessary to make everything work, but that is easy to do.
I also liked the special effects, all of which seemed to work well.
I would recommend this to anyone that needs a moderately priced camera/microphone combo.
This camera is really good. I cannot say it is amazing. But works well in both my laptop and desktop. I never tried in Fast internet connection. But still it is worth to buy (Price is little high)
I will recommend this to friends.
This is a great cam for the price. It has very good low light capabities. The only problem I have encountered is a low frame refresh. I am running Win 2K, with 3/4 Gig of Mem a 2.5 Ghrz CPU, DSL and USB2. I cannot get a decent Frame refresh rate on this thing - I still need to try adjusting the Pixel rate of the cam to see if this has any effect on the frame refresh rate.
Focal quality is excellent and the microfone is very good. Aside from the frame refresh issue it is an excellent product.
I purchased 2 of these cameras a few weeks ago, one for myself and the other for my boyfriend who lives on the west coast. We have been using Live Messenger (the new version of MSN) with the camera and are pretty impressed with the picture quality. While this camera is pretty expensive (compared to say the Logitech BuddyCam pak which comes with 2 cameras for around $50-$60), the extra features that are enabled with this camera, make it well worth the price. The face tracking and the ability to zoom in and zoom out are some of the best features. We chose to only use the cameras for video and our cell phones for the audio, since the audio can be very choppy at times with all the internet congestion. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone looking for a more high end camera that is under $80.
I purchased the Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 just recently and have been using it regularly since then. It is trouble-free, presents a nice field of view, and has some additional adjustment features which are handy and useful. I thought the price I paid was a bargain compared to the store prices for the same product. Works very well in low light situations.
I and my wife used it for few times to have a chat with our relatives in India. We didn't face any problem. The setup was easy and we did see/talk to our relatives after such a long time.
It's a little expensive but worth buying it. The feature I really liked in this webcam is it's ability to focus as the target (your face) moves.
My daughter and two grandchildren moved to California and we wanted to see them more often. Therefore, they already had a web-cam and I thought it would be an easy thing for us to get a web-cam and connect with them for both sound and video.
I purchased the pro-500, it arrived and I installed the software and then the USB connection as directed per instructions. Downloaded the MSN access and Pro-500 upgrage to the software that came with the purchase. That night I was able to connect with, talked to and saw the family in California. GREAT picture and sound.
Next day however, I tried to use MS-Media player and was faced with steady static from all speakers.
I Contacted Logitech service and they told me that I have a defective unit and should return it for replacement.
Went to Amazon.com, made request for replacement, downloaded shipping label, and two days later made the return shipment. Guess what the replacement Web-cam arrive at my door the day I shipped the defective unit back to Amazon. This is trusting your customer to the 10 degree.
Installed new unit and we are connected to the family in California. Great web-cam and greater service from Amazon.
Have not had too much time to play with the options but all has gome well to date. Face tracking is great, and sound correction to eliminate echo is working but needs more adjustment.
I've used numerous webcams over the years, and for the money spent, I was disappointed with the Logitech Quickcam Pro 5000. The picture quality was marginal..very blurry/soft focus. If the cam was located a great distance from the subject, the image was acceptable, but bring it in closer or zoom it in, and all the faces went blurry.
This product delivers everything it claims to. The picture was excellent as well as the sound quality. Much better than expected. Great buy for the money, I would recommend it to anyone!
This camera is truly "plug & play". It was remarkably easy to set up after coming out of the box. The picture quality is great, even in dim light. I am thinking of buying the same model for some relatives due to the excellent value.
I have purchased five of these cameras for distant family members, all of whom are seniors and largely casual computer users. In every case, they have reported that installation of the camera's software and hardware went smoothly and without incident.
The Quickcam works seamlessly with instant messaging software freely available on the Internet. This software enables you and your correspondents to know when each other is online and available to engage in a video conversation. We have encountered some difficulties with MSN Messenger. Navigating the maze of commercially-oriented distractions, in order to acquire the necessary .NET Passport, which is a prerequisite to downloading MSN Messenger itself, can be a challenge. Downloading and installing Skype, on the other hand, is as easy and simple as installing the camera.
The QuickCam provides superbly sharp images, adjusting itself automatically to maintain the right exposure level. Color balance depends on available lighting and is not automatic. For those who want to tweak the balance, rather than change the lighting, the software provides a means to adjust the balance to obtain the most pleasing color tones.
The QuickCam Pro comes with a built-in microphone, but I can't comment on its sound quality. My family had already been using headset microphones to carry on audio conversations, with Net2Phone and Skype. We split the audio signal coming out of the computer's sound card, with a duplex adapter picked up at Radio Shack. That way, we can hear through both the headphones and the speakers; turning down the speaker volume, if necessary to avoid echoes, and turning it up to share the conversation with others in the room. With the Quickcam Pro, we have so far simply continued to use the headsets, rather than change over to relying on the computer's speakers and the microphone built into the camera. If one keeps the speaker volume down and arranges their placement relative to the Quickcam's microphone, to avoid feedback, one could eliminate the fumbling around we now go through in locating, disentangling the wires and putting on the headset when a call comes in.
Another plus for the Quickcam Pro is that it works with both Windows and Mac operating systems. Two qualifications, however. First, before you purchase a Quickcam Pro 5000, check your computer's specifications against the system requirements listed on the box. Your computer must be using a recent version of its operating software and have a processor speed faster than 500 MHz. The Quickcam Pro software will not install on a computer that can't handle the processing demands of streaming video images with 1.3 megapixel resolution. Second, for a social experience which is not constantly distracted by the breaking up of sound and images, it is really necessary to have a high-speed connection to the Internet. If these two conditions are met, you can look forward to endless hours of free, "almost as good as being there" visits with family and friends.
Excellent, easy to use, all tools are very adjustable and the resolution is excellent
I'll try to stick to the facts, but first let me say that this little gadget has been awesome and has helped enrich the lives of my family by being able to keep in touch with family thousands of miles away.
Good picture quality, face tracking is cool, logitech extras are good. Hook up was easy. Directions were simple. I don't have a single complaint about this thing. In fact, I plan on buying some for my parents next Christmas so my new daughter can see and talk to her grandparents.
ENJOY!!
I have three of these now. Much better than the 4000 version which has bad echoing. The 5000 version corrects that issue. I use them with MSN instant messenger. There is a program (which I can't remember the name) that was installed while installing the webcam drivers that kept my monitors from going into sleep mode, so I had to install it. I think it was a utility to keep up with Logitech updates. Sorry I can't remember the name. But, the program is not necessary for the webcam to work. This is a great product. I don't know why anyone would give it less than four stars!
Camera looks great, but crashes system every time I plug in to USB port. I am running Windows XP SP 2 on a 2.4 GHz P4 with 1 GB memory so there should be no system issues. I downloaded the updated software from Logitech and this didn't fix the problem. I plan on returning the camera.
Also, according to the support email I got back from Logitech, which was no help, "The Logitech video cameras are compatible with the USB 2.0 specification, but not compliant. This means the Logitech camera will function properly when plugged into a USB 2.0 port, but the webcam feature will function with the USB 1.1 specifications. The biggest difference between the two USB specifications is speed. So the webcam will work and have full functionality, but it will run at the maximum 12Mbits/sec speed of the USB 1.1 specification."
I've used this webcam with 3 different people so far, and they all report good image quality. One person said that, when the video is viewed full screen, the picture quality is almost as good as a standard definition TV. From my perspective, I could only judge the picture quality of the other parties, and they were pretty poor, probably because they used cheap webcams that were a few years old.
I have used 2 different instant messaging software, MSN and Skype 2.0 beta. While the picture qualities were similar, Skype had significantly better frame rate, and hence motion was not as jerky. However, neither system even came close to 30 frames/sec.
One tip I have is that if your room is dark or you have strong backlighting, you should switch on the low light setting in the software.
Purchased the Pro 5000 as a Christmas present to myself. The clarity of the picture is no where near as sharp and clear as my old Intel PC webcam. This is due to the CMOS lens used, which is more of a wide angle lens. Found it was hard to adjust settings when a white or light colored shirt was worn. I do like the zoom and way you can adjust the framing of the subject with their controls loaded on the desktop.
I bought this camera for my husband who is stationed in Afganistan. The picture is very clear and we enjoy being able to see eachother. However, the sound is very unclear...difficult to understand. Most of the time we leave the sound off. My web cam is a creative and it has a mike that is separate from the camera. We definitely prefer my mike, he says that the sound is clear and reliable. Maybe this webcam works better in a more secluded environment? Not impressed.
My experience with the Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 WebCam was not a good one.
When loaded on my Toshiba laptop, the QuickCam Pro 5000 software caused all of my audio files (Windows Media, iTunes, CDs, and e-mail "You've Got Mail") to sound like "The Chimpmunks."
After spending one hour on the phone with Logitech support and Toshiba support, I gave up, removed the Logitech software from my system, and returned the entire package to the store.
Frankly, it shouldn't be that big of deal to get a major vendor's Web cam product to run on a new Toshiba Qosimio media system running XP, configured with new drivers and 2 gigabytes of memory. My advice: proceed with caution.
I am very happy with the picture quality of this camera. It also has face tracking software that has worked very well (much better than the hardware solution I saw in the original quickcam orbit). The base is ingenious and flexes to fit almost any surface. I set it flat on my desk pointed up at me as well as on top of my flat-panel monitors (pointed straight ahead basically). I can't imagine it not working on a standard CRT as well.
The microphone works well too. As soon as I plugged it in I stopped using my bluetooth headset for computer calls. I get very little sound repetition/echo even using it in a "speakerphone" environment. Still shots are so-so, but that's expected with a webcam.
I got this camera with great hopes, but it produces a blue screen of death when plugged in to my new ECS motherboard. It works in my Asus board (but like the previous poster said, the software CD that came with it was buggy).
Maybe Logitech will wourk out the driver issues soon, but for now it's DOA on some boards.
Good image quality. average sound. you may expiriance a problem to install software and then device itself from CD, which has older version of the installation software. Fortunately there is a latest version of installation package on Logitech support website. I was looking primarily for image quality and I'm quite satisfied.
