Macally Portable Goose Neck USB Video Web Cam - ICECAM

I use this with Yahoo Messenger and my Powerbook. The video quality is far from perfect, and its a little annoying that you have to buy extra software to use the camera with iChat, but I don't really need to do professional video conferencing or anything like that, so it gets the job done for me.
Bottom line... for the price it works pretty well.
I am satisfied with my purchase of the macally icecam and I can confidently recommend this product for the price. It is VERY EASY to set up and use and it works well; However, I took off 1 star for the following 2 reasons: 1. Room lighting plays with the focus and the focus needs very delicate fine tuning - but it has a great picture once you finally get it in focus and get the room lighting right. 2. A separate software (purchase, but only $5.00 w/coupon) needed for Ichat.
I was very disapointed with Icecam after installing it on my G5. I tried using it in the same room I have another windows based computer, the results are a desaster. The video is so dark compared to the other webcam, That I could not make out my own image. I really wish I hadn't wasted my money on it.
it didnt work with my mac. i dont know why. it gave a black screeen after a couple of minutes of picture
It is great that this product is under 80 dollars and works for the mac. However the picture quality is low, the speed isn't great and it has a problem adjusting to light in any situation.
I bought one of these for my mother to use with iChat AV and Mac OS X 10.3. With the addition of Ecamm's "iChatUSBCam" software (not included) it does work quite nicely, given the limitations of this USB camera and assuming you don't go into full screen mode. Physically, the camera is hardly imposing at all. The actual camera itself is slightly smaller than, say, a Bic lighter. The cable to connect it to your computer is strengthened; you bend the wire like a coat hanger to position the camera. The good thing is this makes the camera infinitely positionable. The bad thing is if you want to use this as a desk camera you'll find even the slightest vibration makes the camera wobble. I've found that if you wrap the wire around a solid object like a desk support, the camera becomes significantly more stable. Of course, this camera is really intended for travel use which makes all of this pretty well moot. IMAGE QUALITY: Image quality is decent for a USB camera but it won't win any awards. It does NOT like shadows or dimly lit areas; artifacting becomes a problem when lighting goes down. Given proper lighting conditions it produces an acceptable image. The ring around the lens allows you to focus it, but since the aperature is so tiny those with large hands may find it difficult to adjust. Macally has VERY good customer support and has historically been very Macintosh friendly. BOTTOM LINE: If you're looking for a cheap (Mac-friendly) webcam and you're not terribly concerned about premium image quality, this is a good way to go.
This product does not work with mac as advertised. It took three people at 'MacMall' to tell me this. MacAlly was of no help. It even includes software for the Mac, but it doesn't work.
I ordered the cam to be sent via ground service which was supposed to take 4-6 days, the cam got in in 2 days. Great!!!!!
This webcam was easy to install and use. The picture is not the greatest, but for the price it is amazing. I have had no problems with the cam crashing Yahoo Messenger, running with MacOSX 10.4.8 on an PowerBook 1.5 GHz G4 with 512MB RAM.
The controls are easy to use, but you have to scroll down to find them. It might be nice in the future to have a separate window available to change exposure, frames per second, etc.
Normally, I'd give it a 3. But I'll say it again, YOU CAN"T BEAT THE PRICE. For that, it gets an extra star from 3 to 4.
To the reviewer who wasn't able to see his own image, I recommend turning on the light in the room :o)
Pic is fine on my iBook G4 running OX 4, but camera crashes Yahoo msg constantly, even with the 5USD downloaded
driver from macally!
Manual is useless - only tells you that you can have other people view your image online.
Duh! What a shockingly innovative feature for a webcam? :op
Next time I will probably spend a little more and get a cam that will work properly
with Mac.
I should have saved my 30 some bucks and bought a MIDI in out recorder for my iBOOK for the midi controller as this is a piece of unmittigated JUNK. It's a TERRIBLE picture even with chuffin' professional lighting on it.
My advice is go with an Isight, it's expensive and MAC cameras are WAY more expensive than PC cameras HOWEVER they're are a couple of very nice ones floating around for 50 bucks or so, this piece of metal should be floating in me loo, that's for sure, or, it would make some sort of intresting necklace or bracelet.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT it SUX like a STRAWER FACTORY
It works with OS10.4.6 without buying anything else, although you need install an attached driver in your computer. To the best of my knowledge, this is the most reasonable webcam for Mac users. The design of the webcam and the image quality are not that great, but I find it satisfactory to show your family/friends how well you look.
You only have two choices if you're running OS X 10.4. You can get the Isight for $150.00 or you can get the Macally Icecam for about $30.00.
The Macally gets the job done with just a few drawbacks. 1) You have to buy a driver online for which there comes a coupon when you buy the camera. 2.) The USB cable is only about 15in. long.
I just bought one and am very pleased. I am a Mac user and its very difficult to find one that works well. Set up was amazingly easy, and the picture isn't too bad. It does not like differences in light, but you the picture is okay. Definitely useable for basic communication and whatnot. It does not have a microphone in it, which I just didn't even realize when I bought it. Not a big deal though, as opposed to paying for the iSight, springing for a microphone isn't too big a deal.
This web cam is the only cheap one I could find for a Mac. It works well with Skype, which is all I wanted it for. It has no bells and whistles, but gets the job done.
About average as was the price
this web cam works on my Mac Powerbook 500 G3. it is convenient with the adjustable goose neeck and can show in any direction. The image is good for this G3. If I used it on a more powerful computer it might get 5 stars. This G3 does not have much video ram. It works with everything and is so darn convenient. The Monitor program with it is cool too. I called the Help Desk because I was totally dumb and got right in with an immediatre answer. This company has always been excellent. By the way the camera works with either the Monitor program or Yahoo Messenger but not both at the same time, duh.
I gave a one star to this item only because I couldn't give a lower rating than that. The image quality is very very bad. We decided to return it in just the first half hour we started using it. It doesn't work properly with yahoo messenger and the image quality is very bad in skype.
A family member is moving out of state so she gave a webcam to my kids to keep in touch. Of course it wasn't compatible since I have a Mac. I returned it and started my search for one that would work on my computer. After many hours of research, it came down to an isight for $149 or a Macally for $30. I chose the Macally.
I'll admit that the picture isn't the greatest but I installed it without any trouble at all and it works just fine. My kids were having a ball taking snapshots of themselves and it was very easy for them to use. I would recommend this camera for people who just want a webcam and don't need to have a "top of the line" camera. For the price, this camera is definitely worth it.
Transmitted video using Skype is OK. Not the highest quality but adequate. Purchased primarily to use on my Macintosh laptop. It did not work. However, works fine on my desktop mac. Skype will not work if the camera monitor software provided with this camera is activated. You must quit this application before using Skype. I like goose-neck design. Unfortunately, its video quality isf average to below average. It would be great if Macally improved resolution for this camera (or is there another improved model that I am not aware of!).
As a webcam it's pretty good. Especially for its price. However, if you are hoping to use it on a Mac with iChat, then you have to be careful. It will not function with iChat without a separate program that you have to pay extra for. This isn't labeled on the box or in most advertisements, so heads up.
It's just a couple of bucks for the extra software and they do let you use a demo for seven or so days before you have to buy.
